Who is this course for?

Students with an interest in any or all of the media forms we engage with for work, study or fun, such as TV, movies, music, video games and the ever-growing number of medias we access via the internet. Tasks suit those with abilities and vocational needs that are creative, analytical, and practical.

There is no assumed knowledge or prior learning required, however, the Stage 2 Media Studies course contains practical components that require access to, and confidence using, media technology.

What will I learn?

Through theory and practical tasks, you will explore the following topics:

  • Advertising and Audiences - the relationship between advertising and other media, such as TV, radio and news services. Students complete two written reports analysing advertising strategies and their effect on audiences, and apply their learning to creating a magazine advertisement for an original product and original video, talkback radio production/podcast or website aimed at a specific target audience.
  • The Internet - how the internet is changing the way audiences access older media types, such as TV, movies, music, video games and news. Students complete an oral presentation discussing this topic.
  • Media Investigation - Students complete an Investigation Report, in which they identify, research and report on a current event, issue or topic relating to the media.

How will I be assessed?

  • Theory tasks (written and oral): 30%
  • Practical tasks: 40%
  • Investigation Report (externally assessed): 30%
