Who is this course for?

Stage 2 Mathematical Methods is designed for students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of calculus and statistics. It provides opportunities for students to explore, describe and explain aspects of the world around them using mathematical tools.

This subject can lead to tertiary studies in mathematics, natural sciences, economics and computer science. It also prepares students for courses and careers that may involve the use of statistics, such as health or social sciences. Most importantly, it trains students to think and argue in a logical way.

It is assumed that students undertaking this course will have a high level of achievement in Stage 1 Mathematics Methods, or equivalent.

What will I learn?

You will study topics that will develop your:

  • Capacity to solve problems and apply your mathematical knowledge.
  • Ability to approach new challenges through investigation, modelling and reasoning.
  • Communication skills in describing the relationships observed in situations requiring mathematical reasoning.

Topics are:

  • Differential Calculus.
  • Further Differential Calculus.
  • Discrete Random Variables.
  • Integral Calculus.
  • Continuous Random Variables.
  • Sampling and Confidence Intervals.

How will I be assessed?

You will demonstrate evidence of your learning in the following assessment types:

  • Six skills and applications tasks (50 %).
  • One mathematical investigation (20 %).
  • One two-hour examination (30 %).
